Eight GST billing apps compared honestly: what each one costs, what works offline, who needs e-way bills and e-invoicing, and which app fits which kind of shop.

A customer is at the counter with cash in hand, the bill has to carry the right GST, and the network has picked this moment to drop. That is the real test of a GST billing app, and most comparison pages never run it.

Below are the 8 best GST billing apps in India for 2026, what each one actually costs once the free trial ends, which of them keep working with no internet, and which GST features (e-way bills, e-invoicing, GSTR-1 exports) you only need above a certain size. Disclosure: BillZap is our product and it leads this list. It is also the only app here with no paid tier at all, and it needs no account of any kind; we will be upfront about that, and about what it does not do.

What a good GST billing app has to do

For a shop in India, the bar is:

  1. A tax invoice that holds up. Your GSTIN and the buyer's, HSN or SAC codes on every line, the rate per item, and the tax shown separately as CGST and SGST or as IGST. Get it wrong and the bill gets reissued.
  2. The right tax split, decided for you. Same state as the place of supply means CGST plus SGST; a different state means IGST. A good app reads it from the place of supply and shows you which one it picked before you save.
  3. Speed at the counter. A saved catalogue, saved customers, and a bill in well under a minute.
  4. A way to get paid on the spot. A UPI QR printed on the bill, so the customer pays before they leave, and a PDF you can send on WhatsApp in two taps.
  5. Something your accountant can use. A month-by-month GST summary laid out for GSTR-1, a profit and loss statement, and exports as PDF or CSV.
  6. Honest pricing and honest offline behaviour. Know what stops working when the free trial ends, and what stops working when the signal does.

The 8 best GST billing apps in 2026

1. BillZap (Android)

BillZap is built around the counter, not the office. Every invoice, customer, product and expense is stored on the phone itself, so the app behaves the same in a basement shop with no bars as it does on fibre. There is nothing to sign up for: no account, no phone number, no email, no OTP. You put in your shop name, GSTIN and UPI ID once, and every bill after that carries them.

Billing is quick because the catalogue does the work: pick the customer, add the items, and GST is applied per item at 0, 5, 12, 18, 28 or 40%, with the HSN or SAC code printed on every line. The place of supply decides CGST plus SGST against IGST, and the invoice screen tells you which one it chose. Every unpaid bill carries a UPI QR, so the customer scans with any UPI app and the money goes straight to your bank; BillZap is never in the middle of the payment. The bill goes out as a clean PDF on WhatsApp, or to a WiFi or Bluetooth printer.

Two features stand out. Voice billing lets you say the item in your own language, so "do kilo chini" becomes sugar, 2 kg, HSN 1701, at 5%. The whole app works in 12 Indian languages. On the money side, dues are sorted oldest first in 0–30, 31–60, 61–90 and 90+ day buckets, and reports cover revenue, GST collected (split into CGST, SGST and IGST), profit and loss, day close and a GSTR-1 summary as PDF or CSV.

It is free with no paid tier, no trial that runs out and no cap on invoices. Get it on Google Play.

Limitations: Android only (Android 7.0 and above), and because the data lives on one phone there is no multi-device sync or multi-user access; backups are a file you keep and restore. BillZap does not generate e-way bills or e-invoices (IRN), so a business above the e-invoicing threshold will need a second tool for that.

2. Vyapar (Android, Windows)

Vyapar is the best-known name in this category and earns it with breadth: billing, inventory, expenses, bank accounts and a long list of reports, on Android and on Windows desktop. It is offline-first, so billing carries on without a connection. The free mobile app is genuinely usable, but it works on a single device at a time, and your invoices and messages carry Vyapar branding until you upgrade.

The paid plans are where Vyapar differs from a pure billing app. On the Desktop + Mobile plan for one year, Silver is listed at ₹3,959 and Gold at ₹4,319 (discounted from ₹7,499 and ₹9,099 when we checked). Paying buys sync across devices, multiple companies, e-way bills (10 a month on Silver, unlimited on Gold), and on Gold, Tally export, an accounting module and party-wise profit and loss. If you want one tool that grows into light accounting, Vyapar is the safe pick.

3. myBillBook (Android, iOS, web, desktop)

myBillBook, from FloBiz, is built for businesses that bill from more than one place: the same account on Android, iOS and the web, with a desktop app on the Pro plan. Its yearly pricing is clear: Plus is ₹3,490 a year, Pro ₹3,990, and Pro Max starts at ₹570 a month billed annually, which adds e-way bills, e-invoicing, POS billing and Tally export. Every plan includes one CA login, a thoughtful touch for owners who hand the books over monthly.

The trade-off is the model itself. myBillBook is an account-and-sync product. You sign up with a phone number, your data lives in their cloud, and the plan you pay for decides what you can do. Right for a growing business with staff and a CA; more than a single counter needs.

4. Zoho Invoice (Android, iOS, web)

Zoho Invoice is free for Indian businesses, with no subscription, and it is a serious product: GST invoices with intra-state and inter-state tax rates, unlimited customers and invoices, payment collection, and apps on Android and iOS. If you already live in Zoho (CRM, Books, Analytics), it slots in neatly, and when you outgrow invoicing, Zoho Books is the paid step up.

It is built for service businesses and freelancers who invoice by email more than for shops billing at a counter. It needs a Zoho account and an internet connection, and it has no counter-style quick billing or voice entry.

5. Swipe (Android, iOS, web, Windows)

Swipe has grown fast on the promise of an invoice in seconds, and its free plan is real. The paid tiers add e-invoicing, e-way bills, an online store, and integrations with Shopify and Tally, so it suits small brands that sell both offline and online.

It is a cloud product: you sign up, and billing needs a connection. Paid features sit on several tiers (PRO, JET, RISE and an e-invoicing plan), so price the exact features you need on Swipe's own pricing page rather than trusting a listing site.

6. Khatabook (Android, iOS, web)

Khatabook made its name as the digital bahi-khata, the udhaar ledger that tells you who owes what and sends reminders. It has added invoice creation, GST invoicing and inventory on top. If your main problem is credit customers rather than tax invoices, Khatabook's ledger is still one of the easiest ways to track it, and it is free to start.

As a GST billing tool it is a ledger first. Invoicing is part of the app rather than its centre, and you sign in with your phone number.

7. GimBooks (Android, iOS, web)

GimBooks goes deeper into compliance than most mobile-first apps: e-invoices, e-way bills, GSTR return filing and a wide set of vouchers. Its Premium plan is listed at about ₹4,500 a year (cheaper per month on the 3-year and lifetime options), with a limited free version to try. Pick GimBooks if e-invoicing and e-way bills are a weekly reality for you and you want them on the phone.

It is a cloud app with an account. Small shops that never move goods across a state line may be paying for compliance they will not use.

8. TallyPrime (Windows desktop)

TallyPrime is the accounting standard most Indian CAs know by heart, and that alone keeps it on any honest list. Silver (single user) is ₹22,500 plus 18% GST as a one-time licence, Gold (multi-user) is ₹67,500 plus GST, and rental options start at about ₹750 a month. In return you get full double-entry accounting, inventory, GST returns, e-way bills, e-invoicing and payroll.

It is desktop software that expects someone who knows accounting to drive it. For a shop owner billing at the counter, TallyPrime is usually what the accountant uses at month end, fed by the exports from one of the apps above, rather than the thing you bill on.

Free versus paid: what the money actually buys

Most apps here have a free tier and then ask ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 a year. Be precise about what that buys, because for many shops the answer is "nothing I use".

Multi-device sync and team access. This is the single biggest reason to pay. If two people bill from two phones, or the owner wants to see the day's sales from home, you need a synced, account-based app such as Vyapar, myBillBook or Swipe. A single counter with a single phone does not.

E-way bills and e-invoicing. Both are compliance features with thresholds. E-invoicing (an IRN from the government portal) is mandatory only for businesses whose aggregate turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18. An e-way bill is needed when you move goods worth more than ₹50,000. A neighbourhood shop that sells over the counter usually needs neither. A distributor needs both, and should pay for an app that does them well (GimBooks, myBillBook Pro Max, Vyapar or TallyPrime).

Removing the app's branding. Vyapar's free invoices carry "Vyapar" until you pay. A fair trade for a free product, but know it is there.

Accounting depth. Ledgers, vouchers, bank reconciliation and Tally export matter when your CA works from them. If your CA just wants a GSTR-1 summary and a profit and loss statement every month, a billing app's export is enough.

What the money does not buy is a better tax invoice. A correct GST invoice is table stakes, and it is available free.

GST details that decide whether a bill holds up

Whichever app you choose, check these four things before you trust it with a real bill:

Place of supply. The app should decide CGST plus SGST against IGST from the place of supply, not from where the customer's phone number is registered, and it should show its choice. On a ₹3,740 sale at 18%, that is CGST ₹336.60 plus SGST ₹336.60 inside your state, or IGST ₹673.20 across a state line.

HSN digits. Since April 2021, businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must show at least a 4-digit HSN code on B2B invoices, and above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on every invoice. Services use SAC codes, which begin with 99. Save the code once against the item and let the app print it.

Current rates. Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services sit at 5% or 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods and 0% for exempt essentials. You want to set the rate per item.

Your exports. Ask your CA what they want each month and check the app produces it: usually a GSTR-1 summary of taxable value, CGST, SGST and IGST, plus sales and profit reports, as PDF or CSV. We cover the rules in plain words in our guide to what a GST invoice needs.

How to choose

You run one shop with one counter: BillZap. Free, offline, no account, a UPI QR on every bill, and a GSTR-1 summary for your CA.

Several people bill, or you want sales on your phone from home: Vyapar or myBillBook, on a paid plan for sync.

You move goods across states or have crossed ₹5 crore: GimBooks, myBillBook Pro Max or Vyapar for e-way bills and e-invoicing, with TallyPrime on your CA's side.

You invoice clients by email for services: Zoho Invoice.

You sell online as well as in the shop: Swipe, for its online store and Shopify link.

Your real problem is credit customers: Khatabook's ledger, next to a billing app.

FAQ: GST billing apps

Which is the best GST billing app for a small shop?

For a single shop billing at a counter, BillZap is the strongest fit: it is free with no paid tier, works fully offline, needs no account, puts a UPI QR on every unpaid bill and exports a GSTR-1 summary. If several people bill from different phones, or you need e-way bills, choose a synced paid app such as Vyapar or myBillBook instead.

Is there a completely free GST billing app?

Yes. BillZap is free with no paid tier, no trial and no invoice limit, and Zoho Invoice is free for Indian businesses with unlimited invoices. Vyapar, Swipe and Khatabook have free tiers, but they keep features such as multi-device sync, e-way bills or branding removal for paying users.

Which GST billing app works without internet?

BillZap works fully offline: every bill, customer and report is stored on the phone, and nothing waits to sync. Vyapar is also offline-first, saving your data on the device and syncing it on paid plans once you are back online, and TallyPrime is desktop software that does not need a connection to bill. Cloud apps such as myBillBook, Zoho Invoice, Swipe and GimBooks are built around an internet connection.

Do I need e-invoicing in my billing app?

Only if your aggregate turnover has crossed ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18; below that, e-invoicing (generating an IRN on the government portal) is not mandatory. Most small shops do not need it. If you do, pick an app that supports it, such as GimBooks, myBillBook Pro Max, Swipe's e-invoicing plan, Vyapar or TallyPrime.

Can I make a GST invoice on my phone?

Yes. Every app on this list makes GST invoices on a phone except TallyPrime, which is desktop software. A proper GST invoice from a phone carries your GSTIN and the buyer's, HSN codes per line, the rate per item, and CGST and SGST or IGST shown separately. You can share it as a PDF on WhatsApp or print it to a Bluetooth printer.

What should a GST bill contain?

Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice shows your name, address and GSTIN, a serial number unique for the financial year, the date, and the buyer's name and address (and GSTIN if registered). It also shows HSN or SAC codes with description, quantity and unit, the taxable value after discount, and the rate and amount of CGST and SGST or IGST. For sales to another state, it adds the place of supply. Our GST guide walks through each part.

The bottom line

The best GST billing app is the one that matches how you actually sell. If several people bill from several devices, or you move goods across states every week, pay for a synced app with e-way bills and e-invoicing, and Vyapar, myBillBook and GimBooks all do that well. If you are one shop with one counter, you are being asked to pay every year for sync and compliance you will never use.

BillZap is built for that second shop: a proper GST tax invoice in about 30 seconds, a UPI QR so the customer pays before they leave, a PDF on WhatsApp, and a GSTR-1 summary for your CA. No account, no subscription, and it keeps working when the network does not. Download it free on Google Play and make your first bill today.

Billing taking longer than it should?

BillZap makes a GST invoice in about 30 seconds, works with no signal, and costs nothing.
