AI overview

Quick answer
  • What it is: the official MSME registration, done online at udyamregistration.gov.in. It gives you a Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate.
  • Cost: free. The government charges nothing. Sites or agents asking for a fee are not the official portal.
  • What you need: the Aadhaar of the owner (or managing partner or authorised signatory) with OTP, the business PAN, and the GSTIN if your business is required to have one.
  • Limits from 1 April 2025: micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover; small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.
  • Retail and wholesale traders can register, but their benefit is limited to priority sector lending. The 45-day payment protection does not cover them.
  • No renewal. The registration does not expire; you update it when details change.
  • It is not a trade licence and it does not replace GST registration.

You walk into the bank to ask about a loan for more stock, and the first question is not about your sales. It is: "Do you have Udyam?" Or a company you supply to sends an email asking for your "MSME certificate" before it adds you as a vendor. Either way, a word you had never needed before is suddenly standing between you and the next step.

Udyam registration is the government's free, online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. This guide explains what it is, the current MSME limits (which many websites still get wrong), what it actually does for a shop, a trader or a small manufacturer, and exactly how to register on the official portal without paying anyone.

What is Udyam registration?

MSME stands for micro, small and medium enterprises. The MSMED Act, 2006 gives these businesses access to cheaper credit, faster payment from buyers and preference in government purchases. Udyam is the registration that proves you are one.

It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system in July 2020. Since then, there is one portal, one registration per business and one certificate.

A few points make Udyam unusual for a government registration:

  • It is self-declared. You fill in your details; there are no documents to upload.
  • It is linked to other government data. PAN, GST and income tax return details are pulled in, so your investment and turnover figures are checked against what you have already filed.
  • It is one per enterprise. A business with a shop and a small workshop adds both as units or activities under the same registration, rather than registering twice.

Your certificate shows a number in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, where XX is your state code.

Takeaway: Udyam is a free identity card for your business as an MSME, not a permission to trade.

MSME classification in 2026: the current limits

This is where most confusion starts. The limits were revised in the Union Budget 2025, with effect from 1 April 2025. Many pages still show the older, lower figures.

Category Investment in plant, machinery or equipment Annual turnover
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

For comparison, the limits before April 2025 were ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore for micro, ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore for small, and ₹50 crore and ₹250 crore for medium. If a website quotes those, it has not been updated.

Two rules decide where you fall:

  1. The test is composite. You must be within both the investment limit and the turnover limit for a category. A business with ₹2 crore of machinery but ₹14 crore of turnover is not micro; it is small.
  2. Exports are left out of turnover for classification. A manufacturer that exports half its output is classified on its domestic sales.

Your classification is not frozen. The portal updates it from your income tax return and GST data, so a growing business moves from micro to small on its own.

Takeaway: almost every kirana store, workshop and small service business in India is a micro enterprise under the 2025 limits.

Who can register, and what each gets

Udyam is open to manufacturers, service providers and traders. But what you get from it depends on which you are.

Type of business Can register? Main benefits
Manufacturer (bakery, tailoring unit, printing, fabrication) Yes Priority sector lending, CGTMSE loans, delayed-payment protection, procurement preference, state schemes
Service provider (repair shop, transport, IT services) Yes Same as manufacturers
Retail trader (kirana, medical store, mobile shop) Yes, since July 2021 Priority sector lending only
Wholesale trader or distributor Yes, since July 2021 Priority sector lending only
Informal micro unit with no PAN or GST Through the Udyam Assist Platform Priority sector lending

The honest answer for shops and traders

Retail and wholesale traders were brought under Udyam by an office memorandum of the Ministry of MSME dated 2 July 2021. The memorandum was clear that the benefit for traders is priority sector lending: banks can count loans to them towards the share of lending they must direct to priority sectors, which makes them more willing to lend.

What traders do not get is the delayed-payment protection of the MSMED Act. That also means Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, the rule that pushes buyers to pay micro and small suppliers on time, does not apply to payments made to traders. If you run a kirana store and a business customer owes you money, Udyam alone does not force faster payment.

That is still worth having if you plan to borrow. It is just not everything some websites promise.

The Udyam Assist Platform

Many very small businesses have no PAN or GSTIN: a street vendor, a home-based tiffin service, a one-person repair stall. For them, the government launched the Udyam Assist Platform in January 2023.

Registration on it is done through designated agencies such as banks, SIDBI, NBFCs and Common Service Centres, using the owner's Aadhaar. The certificate it issues is treated on par with Udyam registration for priority sector lending.

Takeaway: register if you sell goods, but know that for traders Udyam is mainly about easier loans.

The benefits, one by one

Here is what Udyam can do, and who it applies to.

Easier bank credit

Priority sector lending is available to all registered MSMEs, traders included. Banks must direct a share of their lending to priority sectors, and loans to registered MSMEs count towards it.

Collateral-free loans under CGTMSE. The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises guarantees loans to eligible micro and small enterprises, so the lender can lend without asking for property as security. The guarantee cover was raised to ₹10 crore under the 2025 Budget. Eligibility and terms are set by the scheme and the lending bank.

Getting paid on time

For micro and small manufacturers and service providers, Sections 15 and 16 of the MSMED Act set a payment deadline:

  • A buyer must pay within 15 days of accepting the goods or services, or within the period agreed in writing, which cannot exceed 45 days.
  • If the buyer pays late, it owes compound interest at three times the bank rate notified by the RBI.
  • You can file a complaint about delayed payment on the government's MSME Samadhaan portal.

Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, in force from FY 2023-24, adds pressure from the buyer's side. A buyer that pays a registered micro or small supplier late can deduct that expense only in the year it actually pays. Many companies now ask suppliers for Udyam certificates precisely so they can track these deadlines.

Government purchases

Central government ministries and public sector units have a target of buying 25% of their annual procurement from micro and small enterprises. Registered MSEs also get benefits such as exemption from earnest money deposits and tender fee waivers, including on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

State schemes

Many states run their own subsidies for registered MSMEs, such as capital subsidies, power tariff concessions and interest subvention. These vary widely by state and by scheme, so check your state industries department's website for what applies to you.

Takeaway: for manufacturers and service businesses, the strongest benefit is getting paid on time; for everyone, it is easier credit.

Benefits versus myths

Udyam attracts a lot of loose claims. Here is what is true and what is not.

Claim True or not
"Udyam registration costs ₹1,500 to ₹5,000" Not true. The official registration is free. Agents may charge for help, but you do not need one.
"You need Udyam to open a shop" Not true. No law requires it to start trading. You need it to claim MSME benefits.
"Udyam replaces GST registration" Not true. They are separate. GST depends on your turnover and type of supply; see our guide to the GST registration limit.
"Udyam is a trade licence" Not true. Shop and establishment registration, FSSAI and local licences are separate.
"Registering gets you a loan" Not true. It makes you eligible for MSME lending; the bank still assesses your business.
"You must renew Udyam every year" Not true. It does not expire. You update details when they change.
"Traders get 45-day payment protection" Not true. For traders, the benefit is limited to priority sector lending.

Takeaway: Udyam is free, optional and useful, but it is not a licence, a loan or a substitute for GST.

How to register on Udyam, step by step

The whole process takes about 15 minutes if you have your Aadhaar-linked mobile phone and your PAN to hand. Field names on the portal may vary slightly from the description below.

Before you start

Keep these ready:

  • Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, karta of an HUF or the authorised signatory, and the mobile number linked to it, for the OTP
  • PAN of the business (for a proprietorship, the owner's PAN)
  • GSTIN, if your business is required to be registered under GST
  • Bank account number and IFSC
  • Your main business activity, number of employees, and investment and turnover figures

The steps

  1. Open the official portal. Type udyamregistration.gov.in directly into your browser. Do not search for it and click the first result, because paid look-alike sites are common.
  2. Choose the new registration option. Click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME".
  3. Verify Aadhaar. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name as it appears on Aadhaar, give consent, and enter the OTP sent to the linked mobile number.
  4. Enter organisation type and PAN. Choose proprietorship, partnership, company, HUF and so on, then enter the PAN. The portal validates it against the income tax database.
  5. Add GSTIN, if you have one. The portal pulls in details from the GST system.
  6. Fill in business details. Name of the enterprise, address of the business and each unit, date of starting, bank details and your social category.
  7. Choose your activity. Select manufacturing, services or trading, and pick your activity using the NIC code list. A kirana store, for example, falls under retail trade.
  8. Enter employees, investment and turnover. Where your ITR and GST data are available, the portal fills these in from them.
  9. Submit with a final OTP. Review everything, accept the declaration and submit with the OTP.
  10. Download your certificate. The Udyam Registration Number is issued, and the e-certificate is sent to your email and can be downloaded from the portal.

After you register

  • Update, do not re-register. If your address, activity or bank details change, log in and update the existing registration.
  • Keep your figures consistent. Because classification is checked against ITR and GST data, the turnover you file elsewhere is what counts.
  • Share the certificate with your bank and with business customers who ask for it.

Takeaway: if a site asks for payment at any of these steps, you are not on the official portal.

What lenders ask for after you register

Udyam gets you into the right lending category. It does not replace the records a bank looks at to decide how much to lend. Expect to be asked for:

  • Bank statements for the last 6 to 12 months
  • Your GST returns, if you are registered
  • Income tax returns
  • Some record of sales: invoices, a sales register or monthly sales reports

Shops that bill on paper often struggle with the last one. A notebook of handwritten bills is hard to total, harder to show, and easy to doubt. Clean, numbered bills and a month-by-month sales summary make the conversation with the bank much shorter.

Where BillZap fits in

BillZap has nothing to do with Udyam registration itself. You register on the government portal, as described above.

Where it helps is the record-keeping that comes after. BillZap, our free billing app for Android, makes numbered GST or non-GST bills for every sale and gives you month-by-month sales reports you can export as CSV or PDF. That is the kind of turnover record a bank or a business customer expects to see alongside your Udyam certificate.

It is free, works fully offline and needs no sign-up. If you are comparing billing apps for a shop, our guide to the best billing app for kirana stores covers what to look for. And if you are GST-registered, our guide to input tax credit explains why clean invoices matter to your business customers too.

FAQ: Udyam registration

Is Udyam registration free?

Yes. Registration on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, is completely free. There is no government fee for registering, updating or downloading the certificate. Websites or agents that charge a fee are not the government portal.

What documents are needed for Udyam registration?

No documents are uploaded. You need the Aadhaar number of the owner or authorised signatory with the linked mobile for OTP, the business PAN, the GSTIN if your business must be GST-registered, and bank details. Investment and turnover figures are pulled from ITR and GST data where available.

What are the MSME limits in 2026?

From 1 April 2025: micro is up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover; small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. A business must be within both limits for a category.

Can a kirana store or retail shop get Udyam registration?

Yes. Retail and wholesale traders have been able to register since July 2021. Their benefit is limited to priority sector lending, so a kirana store gains easier access to bank credit but not the 45-day delayed-payment protection.

Is Udyam registration mandatory?

No. It is not required by law to start or run a business. You need it only if you want to claim MSME benefits such as priority sector lending, CGTMSE loans, delayed-payment protection or procurement preference.

Does Udyam registration expire?

No. It has no expiry and no renewal. You log in and update the registration when your details change, and your classification is updated from your ITR and GST data.

What is the Udyam Assist Platform?

It is a route for informal micro enterprises without PAN or GST to get registered, launched in January 2023. Registration is done through designated agencies such as banks, SIDBI, NBFCs and Common Service Centres using the owner's Aadhaar, and the certificate counts for priority sector lending.

Is Udyam the same as GST registration?

No. GST registration is for collecting and paying GST and depends on your turnover and type of supply. Udyam is an MSME registration for accessing benefits. A business can have one without the other, and many small shops have both.

The bottom line

Udyam registration is free, takes about 15 minutes and does not expire. Under the April 2025 limits, almost every small shop and workshop in India qualifies as a micro enterprise. For manufacturers and service businesses, it brings easier credit and real leverage over late-paying buyers. For traders, the benefit is narrower but still useful: priority sector lending when you go to the bank.

Register on the official portal yourself, ignore anyone charging a fee, and keep your sales records clean so the next conversation with a lender is short. If you want a free app that keeps every bill numbered and your monthly sales ready to show, BillZap is on Google Play. It works offline with no sign-up.

This guide explains Udyam registration in plain language and is not legal or financial advice. Scheme rules, limits and portal steps change; confirm details on udyamregistration.gov.in, with your bank or with your chartered accountant before relying on them.
