UPI QR Code for Shop: How to Get One Free, Which to Choose, and the New 2026 Charges
A neutral guide to getting a UPI QR code for your shop: personal versus business UPI, static versus dynamic QR, the free options from payment apps and banks, the new MDR rules NPCI has announced (now postponed until after Diwali), soundboxes, and how to stop fake payment screenshots.
AI overview
Quick answer- Use a business (merchant) QR, not your personal UPI ID, once your shop takes regular payments. It shows customers your shop's verified name, gives you settlement reports and supports a soundbox.
- You can get one free from PhonePe Business, Google Pay for Business, Paytm for Business, BharatPe or your bank. You need your PAN, Aadhaar and a bank account; most apps verify you within a day or two.
- Static QR: one printed sticker, the customer types the amount. Dynamic QR: generated per bill with the amount already filled in. Use a static sticker at the counter and a dynamic QR on bills.
- New charges, postponed: NPCI announced 0.4% MDR (capped at ₹300) on merchant payments above ₹2,000 from 15 October 2026, then on 13 October postponed it until after Diwali, with the new date to be announced. Payments up to ₹2,000 stay free, small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR keep zero MDR, and customers never pay.
- Never trust a screenshot. Confirm every payment on your soundbox, in your UPI app or by bank SMS before the customer leaves.

Almost every page that ranks for "UPI QR code for shop" is written by a company that wants you to take its QR. PhonePe explains PhonePe's sticker, Paytm explains Paytm's, and the QR generator sites explain their generator. None of them tells you whether you need a business QR at all, what the difference between a static and a dynamic QR actually means at your counter, or what NPCI's new merchant charges, announced for 15 October 2026 and then postponed, will mean for you.
This guide does, without a QR to sell you. It covers which kind of UPI ID a shop should use, where to get a QR for free, the charges that apply now, and the checks that stop the fake-screenshot trick that costs small shops money every week.
Personal UPI ID or business UPI: which should a shop use?
Many small shops start by printing the QR from their personal PhonePe or Google Pay app. It works, but it is the wrong tool once payments become daily.
| Personal UPI QR | Business (merchant) UPI QR | |
|---|---|---|
| Type of payment | Person to person (P2P) | Person to merchant (P2M) |
| Name customer sees | Your personal name | Your shop's name, marked as a merchant |
| Soundbox | Not supported | Supported |
| Settlement report | Only your bank statement | Daily statement of payments received |
| Meant for | Paying friends and family | Selling goods and services |
| Charges to you | Free | Free up to ₹2,000 per payment; see MDR below |
Using a personal account for business collections has two practical risks. First, a customer scanning a QR that shows "Ramesh Kumar" instead of "Ramesh General Store" is more likely to hesitate, especially for larger amounts. Second, banks watch for heavy, regular incoming credits on savings accounts, and may ask questions or put limits on an account that behaves like a shop's current account.
A business QR fixes both. It is also the only kind that works with a soundbox, which is the single most useful fraud check a busy counter can have.
Where to get a UPI QR code for your shop (free)
All of these give you a working merchant QR without paying for the QR itself. Hardware such as a soundbox is extra.
| Provider | How you get it | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| PhonePe Business app | Sign up in the app, complete KYC, download the QR or order a sticker | PAN, Aadhaar, bank account, shop details |
| Google Pay for Business | Sign up in the app, verify your business, get the QR | PAN, bank account, business details |
| Paytm for Business | Sign up in the app, order the "All-in-One" QR | PAN, Aadhaar, bank account |
| BharatPe | Sign up in the app, get a QR that accepts any UPI app | PAN, Aadhaar, bank account |
| Your bank | Ask for a merchant QR on your current account | Usually a current account in the shop's name |
Every UPI QR, whichever app issued it, accepts payment from every UPI app. A customer can pay a PhonePe QR with Google Pay, Paytm or BHIM. So choose on what matters to you: the settlement speed into your bank, the quality of the app's daily report, and the soundbox offer.
What KYC usually asks for: your PAN, Aadhaar for verification, a bank account in your name or the business name, the shop's address, and sometimes a photo of the shop front. If you have a Udyam registration or GSTIN, keep them handy; some providers ask for one to verify the business, but GST registration is not required to get a merchant QR.
Static QR versus dynamic QR
This is the part most vendor pages skip, and it decides how much a QR protects you.
A static QR is the sticker on your counter. It holds only your UPI ID and name. The customer scans it and types the amount. It never changes, so you print it once.
A dynamic QR is generated for one bill. It holds your UPI ID, the exact amount and usually a note such as the bill number. The customer scans it and sees ₹693.50 already filled in; they only enter their PIN.
| Static QR | Dynamic QR | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | Customer types it | Already filled in |
| Typing mistakes | Common (₹69 instead of ₹690) | None |
| Matching payment to bill | By time and amount, by hand | Bill number travels with the payment |
| Best for | Quick counter sales, walk-ins | Bills, home delivery, credit customers, WhatsApp |
| Cost | Free | Free to generate |
You do not have to choose one. Most good shops use both: a static sticker for the queue at the counter, and a dynamic QR printed on every bill so the amount is never wrong.
How a dynamic UPI QR works
Every UPI QR is just a link in a standard format that any UPI app understands:
upi://pay?pa=yourshop@bank&pn=Your Shop Name&am=693.50&cu=INR&tn=INV-0412
Here pa is your UPI ID, pn your name, am the amount, cu the currency and tn the note. A "UPI QR code generator" website simply turns that link into a QR image. So does a billing app, which is the more useful place to do it, because it already knows the amount.
The new UPI charges for merchants (announced, now postponed)
For years, UPI payments to merchants carried zero merchant discount rate (MDR). On 15 September 2026, NPCI published a framework that changes this for some merchants. It was to take effect on 15 October 2026, but on 13 October NPCI postponed it until after Diwali, saying the new date would be announced later. Check your payment app or bank for the start date. When it starts, the framework says:
- Customers pay nothing, ever, for paying by UPI at a shop.
- Payments of ₹2,000 or less: free for every merchant. NPCI says these make up over 95% of UPI merchant transactions.
- Payments above ₹2,000: specified merchants pay 0.4% MDR, capped at ₹300 per transaction.
- Small merchants: those under the P2PM framework receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR continue at zero MDR. GST registration is not needed to qualify.
- No surcharge: you are not allowed to add the MDR to the customer's bill.
- Existing QR codes keep working; you do not need a new sticker.
What 0.4% means in practice, where it applies:
| Payment | MDR at 0.4% |
|---|---|
| ₹2,000 | Nil |
| ₹3,000 | ₹12 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹200 |
| ₹75,000 or more | ₹300 (cap) |
For a typical kirana with average bills of a few hundred rupees, almost every payment sits under ₹2,000 and nothing changes. A shop taking large payments, such as an electronics or furniture store, should ask its payment provider which category it falls in and what monthly report it will get. Compare it with the alternative: card payments typically cost merchants 1.5% to 2.5% on credit cards.
Soundbox: worth it?
A soundbox is a small speaker linked to your merchant QR that announces each payment aloud ("₹250 received on PhonePe"). Providers rent them for a small monthly fee or sell them outright; offers change often, so compare before you sign.
For a counter with a queue, it is worth it. It confirms payment without you picking up your phone, it works while you are serving the next customer, and it is the simplest defence against fake screenshots, because the speaker only speaks when money has actually arrived.
How to stop fake payment screenshots
The most common UPI fraud at shops is not hacking. It is a customer showing a screenshot of a payment that never happened, or happened to someone else, or for a smaller amount. Five habits stop it:
- Confirm in your own channel. Wait for the soundbox, the notification in your merchant app or the bank SMS. A screen in the customer's hand proves nothing.
- Check the amount and the name. A real payment to you shows your shop name and the exact amount. "₹690" and "₹69.0" look alike at a glance.
- Match the UTR for large amounts. Every UPI payment has a 12-digit reference number (UTR). If in doubt, find the same UTR in your app.
- Use a dynamic QR for big bills. With the amount pre-filled, there is no room for a "typing mistake".
- Never accept a "collect" or "request money" for a sale. A customer pays you; you never need to approve anything or enter your PIN to receive money. Anyone asking you to enter your PIN to "receive" a payment is stealing from you.
Where to place the QR in your shop
- At the counter, at eye level, facing the customer, not flat under glass where reflections stop phones from reading it.
- Big enough to scan from arm's length: a sticker of at least 10 cm square works for most phones.
- One QR only. Two different QRs on the counter confuse customers and invite fraudsters to paste their own sticker over yours. Check your sticker every morning.
- On every bill for delivery and credit customers, so they can pay later without asking for your UPI ID.
- Laminated, away from oil, water and direct sun, which fade the code until it stops scanning.
Settlement and bookkeeping
UPI money reaches your bank account almost instantly for personal payments, and on a settlement cycle (often the same day or next working day) for merchant QRs, depending on the provider. Two habits keep your books clean:
- Mark each bill paid as the money arrives, so your dues list is always correct. Our guide to cash memo formats shows how to record the payment mode on the bill.
- Reconcile once a day. Compare the merchant app's settlement report with your bills for the day. A gap usually means a bill marked paid that was not, or a payment with no bill.
UPI payments are a big reason customers choose one kirana over another; our list of ways to increase kirana store sales has more on this.
What a billing app adds to your QR
A QR sticker collects money. It does not know what the money was for. That is where the bill comes in.
With BillZap, you add your UPI ID once in your business profile. From then on, every unpaid rupee bill carries a UPI QR with the exact bill total and the bill number as the payment note. When you share the bill as a PDF or on WhatsApp, the message includes a tap-to-pay link, so a customer at home can pay without scanning anything. When the money arrives, you mark the bill paid.
To be clear about what it does not do: BillZap does not receive the money or confirm the payment for you. The payment goes straight from the customer's bank to yours through UPI, and you still confirm it on your soundbox, merchant app or bank SMS. BillZap is free, needs no sign-up, works offline on Android and makes GST or non-GST bills. Our guides to how to make a GST bill on mobile and choosing a kirana store billing app go further.
FAQ
How can I get a UPI QR code for my shop for free?
Download a merchant app such as PhonePe Business, Google Pay for Business, Paytm for Business or BharatPe, sign up with your PAN, Aadhaar and bank account, and complete KYC. You can download and print the QR yourself or order a sticker. Your bank can also issue a merchant QR on a current account.
Can I use my personal UPI QR for my shop?
You can, and many small shops start that way, but a business QR is better once payments are regular. It shows your shop's name, supports a soundbox and gives you settlement reports, and it keeps business collections from looking like unusual activity on a personal savings account.
Is there any charge for UPI payments to shops in 2026?
Customers never pay. For merchants, UPI is free today. NPCI has announced 0.4% MDR on payments above ₹2,000 for specified merchants, capped at ₹300, but postponed it from 15 October 2026 until after Diwali; the new date is yet to be announced. Payments up to ₹2,000 stay free, and small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR stay at zero MDR. You may not pass the charge on to customers.
What is the difference between a static and a dynamic UPI QR?
A static QR holds only your UPI ID; the customer types the amount. A dynamic QR is made for one bill and carries the exact amount and a note such as the bill number, so the customer only enters their PIN.
Can one QR code accept payments from all UPI apps?
Yes. Any UPI QR works with any UPI app, whichever company issued it. A PhonePe QR accepts Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM and bank app payments.
Do I need GST registration to get a business UPI QR?
No. Merchant QRs are issued on PAN, Aadhaar and a bank account. GST registration depends on your turnover, not on how you take payments; see our guide to the GST registration limit.
How do I know a UPI payment is real?
Check it in your own channel: the soundbox announcement, the merchant app notification or your bank SMS, with the right amount and your shop's name. Never rely on a screenshot shown by the customer.
The bottom line
Get a free business QR from any payment app or your bank, keep a static sticker at the counter and put a dynamic QR with the exact amount on every bill. The new MDR rules leave everyday kirana payments under ₹2,000 untouched. And no matter which QR you use, confirm every payment on your own phone or soundbox before the customer walks away.
